Nice response

You have much talent there girl! I like your diversity and you do keep your focus on the lyrics. good melodic phrases which are poppy but interesting not fluff. the last song (Worth It)is the most commercial for a pitch, good concept there, current urban beat and catchy hook. (Rick Palombi)

That was an awesome trip. I'm happy to say that my songs were appreciated though not country. I performed King For A Day, Couldn't Walk Away and Perfect Enough. The Nashville Songwriter Festival on Music Row is a great event I hope to attend annually. Many stages, lots of songwriters, industry people. I'm a big fan of that town! Went to the Bluebird Cafe and saw David Berg perform. Worked with a co-writer Saturday and Sunday gave a private performance for the second oldest publisher in Nashville. Attended the Luboff's workshop and got some complimentary statements on King For A Day. I didn't do everything I meant to do, there was too much going on. Good trip.
Peaceful World
Sun, Jun. 10 2007
An independent song pitcher was looking for a song for an Indie Film with children's choruses. I sent "Peaceful World". This song was written by my mother, Nicole Milner. She performs piano on the recording and the song is sung by the San Francisco Children's Choir. "Peaceful World" was entered in an international song contest for the UNICEF Year Of The Child. It won for the United States and was included on a recording of the winners from all over the world. The song is administered by my publishing company and record label Nomi Yah Music. The song pitcher forwarded it to the client. A forward is a good beginning!!! The message is just as urgent today as when it was written.

I had to temporarily shut down the Message Board. I was getting too much spam, it got out of control. The tech crew at ASCAP Web Tools are working on the problem.
Happy Birthday and the ASCAP Convention
Sat, Apr. 21 2007
My birthday present to myself was attending the ASCAP Music Creator Convention in Hollywood for the second year. It was good to listen to successful songwriters talk about the music business. Met a lot of talented people and saw some good friends again. One highlight was attending the ASCAP Pop Music Awards at the Kodak Theater. From Jackson Browne to Kelly Clarkson to Germaine Dupri and so many other pop songwriters.
Joy Ripper

2006 News
Mon, Dec. 25 2006
I haven’t written for awhile so I have lots of news. Did you get a chance to listen to my CD yet? I set up a Message Board and it would be great if you’d post some of your thoughts.

At the ASCAP Songwriter Convention in Hollywood, Pamela Oland Phillips (songwriter for Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, Earth Wind & Fire, Reba McIntyre) said some of my lyrics “blew her away”.

At the West Coast Songwriters Conference, Steve Seskin (7 number one hits, Grammy nomination, songwriter for Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Peter Paul & Mary) said “Great lyric. Really cool idea… Lyrics are whoa!“

Also at the WCS conference, Andre Pressis (15 hit songs with 20 million records sold, songwriter for Tim McGraw, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis, Journey, Tower of Power, Heart) said: “Real nice track… Cool hook… Pretty successful pop song.”

Taxi A&R forwarded 11 songs to independent labels, major music libraries and publishers. Some of their comments were: “Very strong song and performance… This is a powerful lyric… You've got some unusual, surprising, effective images and rhymes… These songs show an extremely clever and creative artist…”

Hopeful Dreamer Publishing forwarded 3 songs for indie film opportunities.

Upcoming artist Arielle Silver and her producers took Solid Ground to consider for her debut CD.

My online distributor CD Baby organized a fundraising effort for the Red Cross Katrina Relief Fund. 100% of sales from the CD PEACEFUL WORLD were contributed and a total of $205,060 was raised by the campaign.

I received the ASCAP Plus Award for 2006.

Wow is featured on the Rockin’ Moms Podcast. Check it out at: http://www.rockinmoms.com/playlist.htm

Performance at Fanny & Alexander's
Wed, Dec. 20 2006
Yesterday I attended the holiday party of the West Coast Songwriters. It was at Fanny & Alexander's in Palo Alto. It had a great theme, to perform your best 1 or 2 songs that you wrote this year. I sang Perfect Enough and the rewrite of Couldn't Walk Away. It was a very enjoyable event and the raffle was a fun bonus.
Let's Go!!!

2006 So Far
Sat, Feb. 18 2006

I’ve begun working on my next CD “Now You Nomi”. The first song I’ve started with is “King 4 A Day”, I’ll let you preview it when it’s finished.

After the devastating events in New Orleans last year, my online distributor organized a fundraising effort. 100% of sales from the CD PEACEFUL WORLD were contributed to the Red Cross. A total of $205,060 was raised by the campaign. Thank you CD BABY and those who bought the CDs.

The Valentine Day Contest went well. Entrants wrote answers to the question: How do you know you’re in love? The answers were quite interesting, check back soon on the message board to read them. Grand Prize is a CD/MP3 player and autographed CDs. Runners up won autographed CD. Congratulations.

Taxi A&R forwarded “Worth It” to a music licensing company with placements on CBS, FOX, MTV,the WB. They described the song as “Memorable hook. Very nice song. Good production values, great vocals, good groove, good concept. Great textures in the harmonies.”

Taxi also forwarded “Freedom” (lyrics by XSample, music by Nomi Yah) to the same company. About this song, they said “Engaging. Cohesive. Good use of imagery. Communicates emotion to listener. I enjoyed listening to it. It has a good groove, and vibe to it, and I appreciate the message. The chorus is catchy, and I found myself bouncing in my seat. I am happy to forward this good, catchy reggae track.”

Thanks to West Coast Songwriters, I had the opportunity to play songs for Brian Rawlings (president of Disney Music Publishing) who gave me useful advice about the songs as well industry tips. I also played “Benefits” for Publisher Dale Kawashima (previous president of Michael Jackson’s ATV Music and Creative Exec at Sony Publishing) who took my CD with him. He said the song was "Melodic and appealing. Expressive singing. Good lyrics and hook." Thanks Brian, Dale and WCS.

Rahul Bhatt, (Business & Creative Development, We Are Listening) reviewed “Set Me Free” saying "Interesting production! It was a pleasure listening to ‘Set Me Free’.”

I hope your year is happy and peaceful so far and look forward to hearing from you.

L.A. Publisher listens to "Benefits"
Sat, Nov. 19 2005

Last Friday, I went to a song screening at Fort Mason, San Francisco, hosted by West Coast Songwriters. The guest was L.A. publisher Dale Kawashima, previous President of both Michael Jackson’s ATV Music (including the Beatles catalog) and Irving Azoff’s Giant Music and Creative Exec at Sony Publishing representing the song catalogs of Bruce Springsteen, Prince, Bob Dylan, Burt Bacharach.

Dale listened to "Benefits" and gave the song his professional critique saying "...melodic and appealing... The arrangement grows nicely... The bridge works well explaining and boosting the premise of the song. The bridge is the highlight of the song... Good expressive singing, good harmonies... I’ll take this CD with me... Lyrics are good in verses, explaining the story... Good hook..."

Thanks for the great feedback, Dale! And thanks to Ian and his wife and the West Coast Songwriters for having me.

Music contributes to Katrina Relief
Tue, Oct. 25 2005

After the devastation in New Orleans, my online distributor CD Baby organized a fund raising effort. 100% of sales from the CD "Peaceful World" were contributed directly to the Red Cross for the Katrina Relief Fund. I just got this email from CD Baby reporting on how the fund raising went:

Nomi -
Just a short note to say THANK YOU for putting your CD sales in the Red Cross charity.
In the end, it raised a total of $165,060 over the last 7 weeks, sent directly to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund through our local Portland Oregon branch.
(You should have seen their faces when we brought in that very first check, in person, for $113,000!)
Thanks again.
Derek Sivers, CD Baby
P.S.  We donated $40,000 of our own CD Baby money too, in case you were wondering. So - altogether, that's $165,060 from the artists, $40,000 from CD Baby = $205,060 donated. I hope it helps!
